More Than a Certificate (Matthew 5:31-32)

Christ commands us not to divorce. This seems to contradict Moses and not seem to account for abuse. What does Christ mean in the sermon on the mount? How has divorce been abused in Israel? What is Christ positively commanding about marriage?

Marriage, Divorce, and Remarriage (2) (Matthew 19:10-15)

The disciples hear Christ teach about marriage and they figure out that Christ is pretty serious about the marriage commitment.  They ask the logical question: if marriage is so serious then why get marred?  It would seem to make more sense not to marry at all, but to remain single.  So, is it really better not to marry?  Is marriage only for the weak?  Is it sinful to be single?

Marriage, Divorce, and Remarriage (Matthew 19:1-9)

One of the frustrating things about witnessing Christ’s interaction with the pharisees is their constant attempt to undermine him rather than being instructed by him.  The irony of this is that we do learn things from their interaction even though they do not bear fruits of a teachable heart.  So, what does Christ teach us regarding the Lord’s intention for marriage?

Sojourning Under the Sun: Sabbath Conforming: Marriage (Matthew 5:27-32)

Christ goes through the law and lays out the challenge of the seventh commandment.  This is another commandment that one might think is rather easy to keep, but is this really such an easy command to keep?  Is this one of the least commands or do we make it one of the least commands?  What are some of the implications regarding this commandment?

Blessed by Marriage or Freed through Divorce? (Mark 10:1-12)

So often we use the law of God to find loopholes and technicalities.  I think that many times we like the letter of the law because it narrows the sharpness of its requirement.  But, how do we order our lives by the law of God when it seems contradictory?  For instance Christ gives permission for divorce if there is an adulterous relationship.  The Apostle Paul allows for divorce if the unbeliever cannot live with the believer.  Yet, Christ states that, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her.”  How do we reconcile these teachings on divorce and order our lives when they seem to contradict one another?

Deceived then Relieved (Genesis 3:15)

Do we think about what it means when we say things like, “Jesus is the reason for the season?”  There is no doubt that Christ’s entrance into history is significant, but why is it significant?  What does it teach us about God being Sovereign and man not being as sovereign as man thinks?
