Our Sojourning Community (Hebrews 13:7-19)

Hebrews is concluding the exhortation for us to continue our sojourn under the sun. We are the Lord's people, called to honor the Lord, and a people oriented to heaven. The Lord uses the preaching of the gospel as the primary means to keep us on the way. We are also reminded about the significance of prayer being the means that we earthlings can use to reach the inner recesses of the heavenly tabernacle.

Who is Christ’s Family? (Matthew 12:46-13:9)

Christ’s immediate family desires to see him so they come to the house where Christ is teaching.  Christ does not seem all that receptive to their arrival, but rather launches into a teaching about the family of God.  Why does Christ delay in inviting them to come into the house?  Why does Christ then go on to speak about the parable of the sower?

The Christian Household (Colossians 3:18-4:1)

The Apostle Paul exhorts children to obey their parents for this is pleasing to the Lord.  It is not a surprise to us that Paul would exhort children to obey their parents, but what does this imply about their status in the church?  Why is the context of their exhortation so significant? Why is it important that this exhortation seems to echo the Old Testament?  What could this imply about children being in covenant with the Lord?

Sharing our Sojourn (1 Timothy 5:1-8)

The Apostle Paul lays out how the church is to function as a family.  First, there is the reminder that Paul has for Timothy that we view the members of the church as family members.  However, this has implications for how we widows who are part of the church.  How are we to treat widows?  Do all widows receive the same amount of funds from the church?  Is there a provision for widows not to receive any funds?  How do we know who is to receive and who is not as we are all one family?
