Agents of Judgment

The Lord promises to bring his people into His rest.  So, now we consider the Lord’s people going into Canaan.  They have a command to devote to destruction which is pretty extreme.  How does this show that the Lord is serious about his redemption and also his judgment?

God's Exodus People

The Lord sword to Abraham that he would deliver Abraham’s descendants out of the land of slavery.  We look at the exodus and the assurance that the Lord’s mighty hand is shown in this marvelous event.  We are reminded that God works in the context of a community, and he brings his pilgrim citizens out of their slavery to the land of life.

The Citizen's Amen

The Lord secures his citizens and shepherds them to rest in the heavenly city. We consider Genesis 15 and how this ancient history teaches the unity of God’s purpose through history for all God’s citzen people. We might be tempted to think that this history is too old to impact our life today, but in fact it lays out the very ethic for how we orient our days.

Am I A Citizen?

We consider what it means that the Lord will put enmity between the Seed of the Woman and the Seed of the Serpent.  The Lord is making explicit that as the human race is divided into two lines the Lord determines his citizen and his means.  The Lord will raise up a citizen people through Abraham.  If the promised line comes through Abraham how do we become part of this kingdom? Can we even know if we are citizens of God’s kingdom?

How Does One Become A Citizen?

The Lord is going to raise up citizens to dwell in his kingdom. They will be pilgrims in this world. This week we spend a few minutes seeking to lay out how one enters into the Lord’s kingdom. Does the Lord secure every single human being in this age meaning that all are in Christ Jesus no matter what? Does the Lord secure only 144,000 people as a very literal number? Can we even know if we are citizens of heaven and members of God’s Pilgrim Citizens?

One Law Two Covenants?

We see the tree of life in the Garden of Eden and in the heavenly temple. It would appear that as Adam has to obey the law and we are called to obey the law that our covenantal arrangement is the same. Do we individually have to earn heaven? How do we enter heaven after Adam Failed? What is the consequence of the fall and what is the consequence of Christ’s success?

Gateway to Sabbath Glory

When we do our Bible Studies we can dig down so deep in the significant particulars of Scripture that we miss the overall trajectory of God’s word.  It is important to learn what God desires us to do out of gratitude for our redemption in Christ.  We are called to live as slaves of righteousness as we offer ourselves as living sacrifices to God as we walk in the Spirit.  So, what is the overall thrust of Scripture?  What does the Sabbath teach us about this thrust?  What does the opening passage of scripture teach us regarding our communing with God?

God Calls His Community

We do a series that piggy backs on God’s Pilgrim People.  Now we are going to look at the overall structure of Scripture where we see the whole of the scripture rather than the historic progression.  This is an introduction to the series, but we also hear some important precautions about our human tendency as we start this new series considering our heavenly citizenship.

Comissioned Pilgrims

It is tempting to think that Christ’s resurrection only guarantees our resurrection.  However, the Gospel accounts communicate that Christ’s resurrection does far more than merely guarantee a resurrection.  What does Christ’s resurrection guarantee?  How does Christ’s resurrection encourage us today to continue to fight the good fight while we are on our earthly pilgrimage?

Hope in Exile

Israel forgot her God and is in Babylon in the midst of exile. Israel is away from the promised land as a consequence for their sin.  Has the Lord forgotten his people?  Is this a time to take up arms and revolt like in the time of Joshua? What does Jeremiah tell them?  What does Jeremiah’s exhortation teach us today?

Faithful Despite Faithlessness

Israel is in the land, and Joshua gives his farewell address.  He exhorts the people to consciously choose if they will follow the Lord or the false gods of the land.  We can think that we are going to be faithful or that God should note our faithfulness, but how much of it is really about us?  Where do we find the power to persevere in our pilgrimage?

God's Conquest

We skip over the wilderness wandering to the next chapter in Israel’s pilgrimage through this earth.  We move to Joshua surveying the land of Canaan as he gears up to carry out his war mission.  Why does Israel go into the land of Canaan in such a violent manner?  What does this tell us about life and our struggle as we live our lives under the sun as God’s pilgrim people?

Rebellious Renegades

Our story of God’s pilgrim people skips ahead to the tragedy of Israel’s rebellion.  We would hope that with the huge build up and the drama of being called out of Egypt that the Lord’s people would possess the land of Canaan.  However, God’s pilgrim people fail to see the big picture.  Why would we want to see the bigger picture of God’s redemptive mercy?  What does the full context of covenant history teach us about God’s gracious work?

Definitive Defender

Our story of God’s pilgrim people skips ahead to the exodus story.  This is a wonderful story that demonstrates the Lord’s sovereign power over the serpent seed.  God will prevail.  How does this story encourage us today?  How does this story assure us that God can and will build his kingdom?

Senile or Serene?

We move forward and recount tthe Lord’s gracious preservation as he works in the midst of his pilgrim people. We are invited to witness Jacob saying good bye to Joseph his favorite son. What does this scene teach us about Jacob’s reflection on life? What does this teach us about our earthly sojourn under the sun?

God Wrestles and Prevails

The progress continues in the pilgrim story. Jacob goes away to his uncle’s house only to meet his match. HIs uncle is a more skilled trickster and schemer than Jacob. However, the Lord sustains Jacob only to wrestle with him. Why does the Lord wrestle with Jacob? Why is his name changed from “Supplanter” to ‘Wrestled and Prevailed?”

God's Tower

The progress continues in the pilgrim story. Isaac has two sons, and one son is sent away. This is not the apostate son, but the son of the promise. Has the Lord failed to uphold his promise? Is the Lord really going to build a kingdom or is his kingdom always going to have set back after setback? Why is Jacob’s tower so significant in light of Jacob’s exile?

Covenant Confirmation

The Lord finally provides the promised heir to enter history. You would think that the story of redemption would be closed because the Lord has fulfilled his promise. However, the Lord endangers this promise by commanding the promised child to be sacrificed. Why would the Lord do such a thing? What does this sacrifice disclose to us?
